The US Marine Corps Systems Command is currently in the process of deploying the recently introduced Ultra Light Tactical Vehicle (ULTV), as a part of the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 modernization plan.

The ULTV is being deployed in collaboration with the First Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), with initial vehicles delivered to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in the I MEF. A phased rollout is planned across the MEF and subsequent fielding events in the Marine Corps.

Designed to operate in an anti-access/area denial environment, ULTV is poised to enhance the mobility and sustainability of infantry, reconnaissance, and logistics units.

Replacing the aging Utility Task Vehicle (UTV), the ULTV is a versatile off-road utility vehicle that offers modular capabilities. Its flexible configuration enables it to meet various infantry requirements, such as logistical support, casualty evacuation, command and control, and electronic warfare missions.

Additionally, the ULTV’s internal transportability in the MV-22 and CH-53E/K aircraft allows for the swift deployment, enhancing its rapid response capabilities.

“The ULTV is more than just a tactical vehicle; it enhances our capabilities across the board, ensuring the success of our mission and the safety of our Marines,” said Program Manager for Light Tactical Vehicles Jennifer Moore.

“The ability to rapidly configure the ULTV to suit diverse mission needs– from logistical support to electronic warfare– enhances our capabilities in previously unimagined ways,” he added.

The ULTV is based on the Polaris MRZR Alpha, a variant of the Polaris light tactical vehicles also being purchased by USSOCOM.

ULTVs are utilized by the Marine Corps, offering versatile capabilities for infantry needs such as logistics support, casualty evacuation, and command and control.

On the other hand, Polaris light tactical vehicles serve various military applications including reconnaissance and rapid response missions.

The UTV and ULTV vehicles in USMC service will mitigates the infantry battalion support gap, with the ability to operate in remote, rural regions where currently fielded ground mobility platforms may be unsuitable due to size, weight, and safety concerns. They will be primarily used as a logistics vehicle to transport ammunition and other break bulk cargo for use by infantry battalions and are also available to execute casualty evacuation missions.

The vehicles will be employed by Marine Expeditionary Units, special purpose Marine Air Ground Task Forces and the unit deployment program to support the Execution of heli-borne and tiltrotor operations.
