The Lithuanian defense ministry awarded Heckler & Koch GmbH a contract worth 19 million euros on September 30 for the delivery of additional G-36 assault rifles.

The new batch of assault rifles will be made for and delivered to the Lithuanian armed forces in 2022-2023.

According to the defense ministry, the weapons are bought to maintain the existing capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and to continue developing new, as well as to replace obsolete and no longer used rifle weaponry systems.

G-36 is currently the main weapon used by Lithuanian Armed Forces. It has been in service in the country since 2007.

Over the years and over subsequent orders, the rifle received several modifications and now has the designation G36 KA4M1. Lithuanian armed forces customizations include modified stocks, grips, accessory rail, as well as the ability to be used by both left- and right-handed soldiers.

The German company has also supplied 40 mm HK269 grenade launchers to Lithuanian armed forces in the past.

“We continue our efforts to equip the Lithuanian Armed Forces with up-to-date and credible weaponry, technical and tactical parameters of the G-36 meet the Lithuanian Armed Forces requirements and ensure the weapon will be reliable across different tactical conditions, to serve national and international military operations needs,” Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas commented.
