South Korea’s homegrown Haegung K-SAAM missile passes key trials

The Republic of Korea Navy has completed key tests of the new Haegung shipborne missile in cooperation with the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ).

According to the agency, the missile successfully hit its targets in two separate tests on December 8 and 10.

The surface-to-air missile was fired from the lead Daegu-class frigate, which will employ the missile in the future. Other ROK Navy ships, such as future amphibious assault ships, and minelayers.

Also referred to as K-SAAM, the missile’s development was completed in 2018 in cooperation with the defense procurement agency (DAPA) and defense contractors LIG ​​Nex1, and Hanwha Defense.

“This marks the beginning of the mass production phase of the Haegung, South Korea’s first anti-ship defense guided weapon capable of intercepting anti-ship missiles and provide protection against aircraft,” Bong-gi Jang, director of the Guided Ammunition Center at DTaQ, said at the conclusion of the trials.
