The Indian Navy says it has successfully demonstrated the accuracy of an extended-range land attack Brahmos supersonic cruise missile fired from the stealth destroyer INS Chennai.

In the test from March 5, the missile hit its intended target with accuracy after traversing an extended range trajectory and performing complex maneuvers, according to the navy.

Both Brahmos missile and INS Chennai are indigenously built and highlight the Indian Navy’s contribution towards the Make in India endeavors.

According to BrahMos Aerospace, the Indian-Russian joint venture responsible for the delivery of the missile in several variants, the first test of the land attack variant of the missile from a ship took place in 2008.

Compared to the original missile’s range of around 300 kilometers, the extended range variant adds around 50 kilometers to the reach.

The Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.

India recently also secured the first export success with the missile, signing a $375 million agreement with the Philippines for the delivery of BrahMos missiles.
