The US armed forces carried out a helicopter raid in northeastern Syria that killed a senior ISIS leader and wounded four US servicemembers and one working dog.

The raid took place late in the night between Thursday and Friday and was conducted together with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

An explosion on target wounded the US servicemembers and the dog. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) did not provide details on eventual injuries sustained by Syrian armed forces.

The US servicemembers and working dog are receiving treatment in a US medical facility in Iraq.

The senior ISIS leader killed in the raid was Hamza al-Homsi. CENTCOM did not provide details on Homsi’s exact role in the organization.

The US continues to target ISIS leaders after killing two leaders of the terrorist organization in 2022. In February last year, a daring US raid led ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi to blow himself up, while a July drone strike eliminated Maher al-Agal, one of the top five ISIS leaders and the leader of ISIS in Syria.
