The US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded Teledyne Brown Engineering a $39.2 million contract modification for the delivery of additional MK11 seal delivery vehicles.

Also referred to as shallow water combat submersibles, the “mini-submarines” are used to insert and extract special operations forces (SOF) in high threat areas.

Mk11 is the latest generation of the systems, developed by Teledyne under a contract from 2011. The newest generation is replacing the MK 8 SDVs used by US Navy SEALS and the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service.

In addition to the US Navy, the Mk11 was ordered by the UK’s elite SBS unit in September 2018.

At 6.8 meters, Mk11 is slightly larger (30 cm) than its predecessor and 15 cm taller. The SDV can reportedly deliver up to 6 personnel to enemy shores, including two crew, and can dive to depths of around 50 meters.
