Northrop Grumman Corporation announced the successful completion of M829A4 120mm cartridge production for the US Army, January 12, 2024.

Northrop Grumman Corporation recently finalized the production of the M829A4, a specialized line-of-sight kinetic-energy cartridge tailored for the Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 (System Enhancement Program Version 3).

The company stated that this ammunition empowers the Abrams with the capability to effectively counter threat vehicles equipped with third-generation explosive reactive armor. The completion of production in December 2023 indicates Northrop Grumman’s cessation of depleted uranium ammunition production, reflecting a shift in manufacturing focus.

Looking ahead, Northrop Grumman affirms its commitment to supporting the US and allied forces by continuing the production and development of training and tactical medium- and large-caliber ammunition.

“Our team continues to deliver tactical and training ammunition as partners to help the US Army meet its ever-increasing requirements for medium- and large-caliber systems worldwide. The successful completion of M829A4 during this final production year contract exemplifies of our longstanding partnership with the US Army and our commitment to delivering on our obligations.”

“We also are developing advanced ammunition types, including the M1147 120mm Advanced Multi-Purpose cartridge, a ‘smart round’ that will replace the capabilities of multiple rounds currently in inventory,” said Dave Fine, vice president and general manager, armament systems, Northrop Grumman.

Northrop Grumman, with a history of over 40 years in designing and developing medium- and large-caliber ammunition, stands as a reliable provider of tactical and training tank ammunition to US and allied militaries globally.

According to the company, their ongoing efforts are geared towards advancing ammunition technology. This involves the development of innovative ammunition types with features such as air-bursting, proximity, and guided munitions, emphasizing enhanced precision and the capability to counter unmanned threats and defeat advanced armor.
