The US defense department has awarded L3 Harris a $28 million contract for work on the upgrade of Greek F-16 jets.
As announced by the Pentagon, the contract is for the upgrade to existing Hellenic Air Force F-16 aircrew training devices to the F-16V configuration.
This is a necessary undertaking as the European country recently signed a $270 million contract with Lockheed Martin as prime contractor to bring some 85 of the Hellenic Air Force F-16 aircraft to the F-16V configuration.
L3 Harris, a company created by the merger of L3 Technologies and Harris Corporation in 2019, will perform work under the contract at Arlington, Texas, and is expected to complete it by December 31, 2027. This is when Lockheed is expected to hand over the final upgraded F-16 jet.
The upgrade will introduce capabilities comparable to those found on fifth-generation aircraft to a major portion of the Hellenic Air Force F-16 fleet.
Lockheed Martin will work with Greece’s Hellenic Aerospace Industry to deliver the first upgraded aircraft as early as 2020.
