The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) has awarded a contract to the Swedish defense contractor Saab for the supply of the man-portable weapon system, Carl-Gustaf.
According to the company’s announcement, Japan’s order for the man-portable, multi-role Carl-Gustaf weapon system comprises over 300 units, with anticipated deliveries scheduled for the year 2025.
The Carl-Gustaf is a portable weapon system known for its broad array of ammunition options. It is known for its lightweight design and widespread adoption as a primary shoulder-launched weapon in numerous nations, including use by the JGSDF since 1979.
“This order is further proof that our multi-role weapon system Carl-Gustaf meets the high standards of Japan Self-Defense Forces, and we look forward to continuing to support and strengthen their capabilities,” says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.
According to the company, the Carl-Gustaf system is currently distributed to over 40 countries worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, and Estonia.
