The US Navy will deploy its two hospital ships to coastal cities to support the efforts of hospitals in the wake of the COVID-19, US president Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

USNS Comfort is set to sail to New York while the exact location for the lead ship in the class, USNS Mercy, is yet to be determined. Mercy is expected to dock in a city on the West Coast.

It is anticipated that Mercy and Comfort assist with medical interventions that are not related to the Coronavirus, allowing hospitals to concentrate on patients affected by the virus, it was explained. Both ships feature fully-equipped operating theaters and 1,000-bed hospital facilities.

The US Navy or the Pentagon are yet to announce the dates of the deployments. Both ships are currently still undergoing regular maintenance work, according to USNI News.
