Several US Navy and Coast Guard ships are searching for a possible sailor overboard from aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

According to the US 3rd Fleet, coast guard assets, navy aircraft and ships, including USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), USS Russell (DDG 59), USS Howard (DDG 83), and USS Charleston (LCS 18) are searching for the sailor off Southern California.

The search and rescue procedures were initiated after sailors spotted what appeared to be a person in the water and one sailor was unaccounted for during the muster. USS Theodore Roosevelt immediately launched three search and rescue helicopters and a rigid hull inflatable boat.

USS Theodore Roosevelt has been underway since September this year, in preparation for a back-to-back deployment after returning from an Asia-Pacific deployment in July.
