The Romanian Armed Forces have taken delivery of the first 12 Piranha 5 wheeled armored vehicle from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS).

The delivery milestone comes after GDELS, in cooperation with its strategic Romanian partner Uzina Mecanică București (UMB), started serial production of the Piranha 5 in Romania in November 2019.

In January 2018, GDELS signed a contract with the Romanian Army to deliver up to 227 Piranha 5 wheeled armored vehicles as part of the army’s plan to modernize its legacy TAB APC wheeled armored vehicle fleet.

The Piranha is being delivered in six different configurations, under a transfer of technology project between GDELS – Mowag and the Romanian company Uzina Mecanică București (UMB).

In addition to the Piranha 5, GDELS has also delivered the Piranha III, which has been in Romanian Army service since 2006.
