Members of the US Space Force have received their official name a year after the establishment of the sixth military service branch.

According to an announcement from vice president Mike Pence during ceremony celebrating the one year anniversary of the Space Force, members of the Space Force will from now on be known as guardians.

The US Space Force later confirmed the choice of the name, adding that “guardians” was a name with a long history in space operations, tracing back to the original command motto of Air Force Space Command in 1983, “Guardians of the High Frontier.”

“The name Guardians connects our proud heritage and culture to the important mission we execute 24/7, protecting the people and interest of the U.S. and its allies,” the Space Force said.

According to Defense News, the command received over 500 submissions from space professionals for the name. The choice was narrowed down to astra, guardian, sentinel, talon and titan before guardian was selected.

“..it is my honor, on behalf of the president of the United States, to announce that, henceforth, the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as “Guardians,” vice president Mike Pence said announcing the name. “Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and guardians will be defending our nation for generations to come.”

“Let me urge each and every one of you Guardians to keep pushing. Keep pushing.”
