Canada’s top uniformed official Admiral Art McDonald has stepped aside from his position of the Chief of the Defence Staff following the launch of an investigation into his alleged misconduct.

Canadian defense minister Harjit S. Sajjan and the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service confirmed the launch of the investigation.

“I have stated, I take all allegations of misconduct seriously and continue to take strong action on any allegation of misconduct that is brought forward. No matter the rank, no matter the position,” Harjit S. Sajjan said in a statement.

The defense minister further said he appointed Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre as acting Chief of the Defence Staff.

While there was no further official information on the investigation, local reports say the investigation was launched following sexual misconduct complaints.

Admiral Art McDonald became the commander of the Royal Canadian Navy in June 2019, and was appointed to the position of Canada’s top military officer last month.
